TARGUS RELEASES SECOND ANNUAL 2024 GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

July 09, 24
The cover of a report from Targus that details its sustainable business practices

This in-depth report describes our company’s latest progress regarding sustainable business practices, initiatives, and a future-looking roadmap to protect people and our planet.

Targus® continues to move sustainability to the forefront of our global business by taking positive, tangible actions that reduce our environmental footprint with greater transparency and accountability.

In our new second annual 2024 Targus Sustainability Report, we share the latest developments in our journey toward offering sustainable tech solutions and the future roadmap priorities and goals that we have established, based on five of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where we believe our company can make the greatest positive impact.

Read the in-depth report to find out how Targus is addressing the climate crisis and the progress that we have made so far, such as incorporating more recycled materials into our sustainable tech accessories, products, and packaging, improving the breadth and scope of our sustainability reporting and certifications, and reducing our carbon footprint throughout our manufacturing processes and the supply chain. Below are some of the key highlights of our current and upcoming sustainable business practices.

Making More Sustainable Tech Solutions

From our laptop bags to tech accessories, Targus is continuing to move to more varied and sophisticated product strategies that are more sustainable. For example, since introducing our EcoSmart® products in 2008, where we turn plastic water bottles into material to make our laptop bags, Targus has recycled more than 32.2 million water bottles, saving the equivalent of 2,008,477 lbs. of CO2 compared to virgin plastic.

In 2024, Targus also introduced our new Coastline Collection, laptop bags made from certified ocean-bound plastic and a high percentage of recycled material. Today, there are five trillion pieces of plastic in our ocean with 11 million tons entering our oceans each year, according to OceanCycle. Using repurposed ocean-bound plastic is a sustainable business practice that helps to combat plastic waste in our waterways by preventing or diverting plastic from entering the oceans.**

We’re also continuing to expand our line of EcoSmart™ sustainable tech accessories, which are made with up to 85 percent certified post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, operate on ultra-low-power Bluetooth® technology, and come in recycled packaging.

Reporting & Certifications

Strengthening our global sustainability reporting and certifications plays a crucial role in holding ourselves accountable and measuring our progress toward sustainable business practices.

For example, Targus has completed Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reporting through Project Gigaton™, a program created by Walmart to engage suppliers in climate action along with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other stakeholders. In the reporting year, Targus saved 8.9 Mt of CO2e emissions through its recycling activities and avoided 7.1 Mt of CO2e in greenhouse gas emissions.***

As a result, Targus now has Giga Guru status, signifying superior environmental leadership among Walmart suppliers. We consider this a notable achievement as Targus continues to utilise sustainable business practices.

We also improved our annual EcoVadis sustainability rating this past year. The EcoVadis methodology assesses companies’ policies, actions, and results in the areas of environmental impact, labour and human rights standards, ethics, and procurement practices. Our company achieved a bronze EcoVadis rating in 2023 at the 64th percentile, which is the top 16 percent of companies in the computer wholesale, computer peripheral equipment, and software industries globally. That’s a 13-point increase from our 51st-percentile ranking in 2022.

Looking to Future Sustainable Tech Solutions

At Targus, we’re constantly looking inward and focusing on clear goals and targets to ensure we contribute to genuine, tangible change. Our company has aligned our journey with five of the 17 UN SDGs, where we believe our company can make the most meaningful difference. By aligning with these SDGs, Targus aims to achieve the sustainable business practice of becoming Net Zero by 2050, design 95 percent of our packaging to be fully recyclable by 2025, and reduce our total plastic packaging mass by 50 percent by 2025 versus 2020.

While we’re proud of the progress that we have made so far to help protect our environment, we also realise that we have a lot more work to do regarding future sustainability efforts.

* Targus global sales results: units + revenue, 2019-2023.

** Ocean-bound or prevented/diverted plastic is plastic waste recovered from within 50 km (30 mi) of an ocean coastline or major waterway that feeds into the ocean in a geographic region that lacks formal waste management. Except in the case of a sea, material collected from major waterways may be no further than 200 km (120 mi) from the mouth or end point of that waterway.
